Bonus Point RR or NRR?

Postby angeltoast » Mon Nov 26, 2018 5:16 pm

In today's DEV match, my team beat a technically superior team by bowling them out in 34.30 overs. Because their Run Rate at the time the last wicket fell was 3.83 (in 34.30 overs) compared with our 4.13 (in 40 overs) they collected the bonus point, being within 25% of our Run Rate. But this ignores the fact that they were bowled out in fewer overs. Surely, to be fair, it should be the Net Run Rate that is used to calculate the bonus point? In this particular match, their NRR would have been 2.64 and the bonus point would have been correctly awarded to my team?

Hi Liz, I think you have based your calculations on a 50 over game

Your opponent scored 132 runs 132/40= a run rate of 3.3

132x1.25=165 meaning they will pick up the bonus point if you scored 165 or less runs in your first innings

batting 2nd (and winning) it is easy to work out who will get the bonus point.

Quite simply to win and get the bonus point batting 2nd you need to score the runs with 25% of the overs remaining, so in Dev you have 30 overs, T20 it's 15 overs and SOD 37 overs. If you get the runs quicker than that you will get the bonus point

Your game you scored at 4.125 giving a 3.09 target for the bonus point, the opposition scored at 3.3

Right idea but this is incorrect.

Its 25% greater than the losers score, not within 25% of the winners score. So its 32 Overs for Dev (i.e. 80%), 16 in T20 (i.e. 80%) and 40 overs in SOD (i.e. 80%).

Note that if your opponent chases the score is 40.1overs in SOD say but smashes a 4 or a 6 and that pushes their NRR above the 25% greater threshold then they will claim the bonus point and the other team loses it.

So as a rule of thumb, If batting first and you score 300 in any format, if your opponent scores 240 they will achieve a losing bonus point, if they do not then the winning team gets it. If you are chasing if you chase the score within 4/5 of the overs (or less if you smash some extra runs over the required total) you gain the bonus point, but if not the loser gets the bonus. This can be scaled for various scores.

It would be great if a line could be added to the worm chart that shows the bonus point target for the second innings. Would be a nice members' feature but appreciate this might not be possible / low priority
