Today my batsmen had fun Tonking Ricky Town - Solkar, Berrisford and Petrie were the chief destroyers as we posted an imposing total of 362 batting first. Waqar and Kotze put in a good effort in the chase for RT but they fell short by 110 runs as Afridi took a 5-wicket haul.

In another significant development - Rogue Traders appeared to hit the self destruct button as they were bowled out for just 106 against Fictionally Inclined (or perhaps Fictionally Inclined hit the destruct button for Rogue Traders ;-).

Today's results give us a 5 point lead over Rogue with only 2 matches to play. Next week we play Rogue so that will be a crucial match. Fictionally Inclined have an important match against Ricky Town next week - RT needs to win to have a chance of avoiding relegation while a win for FI would seal a top 5 place for them.

Yeah - good win today over Rtj (makes up slightly for the NT game) takes us 7 points clear in SOD but its the 2020 we want really to go with last year's SOD and the friendly league wins.

And that’s to go with his 5-48 and 52* in our first game 8-) Bloke can play, though he is arguable my most frustrating player because he’ll either win me matches or lose them, luckily he loves playing against your boys :P

Not looking good for Fictionally Inclined vs Ricky Town. We had a solid start, bringing them to 6-133 off 28 overs, but their 8th batsman Thimira Peiris smashed 73* to lift their final score to 271 - a very decent effort against the FI tail bowlers. Scott had another disaster game, 1-71 off his 10. Has taken 37 wickets in all format this season compared to 65 last - the only time he has taken less than 50 wickets in a season is back in s14 when he took 46 wickets. I'm really doing something wrong with him this time round!

Anyway this decent total looks beyond us after a complete failure by the top and middle order. We're 6/134 at the time of writing, 15 overs left so RRR is more than 9. The best we can hope for at this point is to scrape a bonus point - we'll need another 30 runs for this by my reckoning and even this is not a sure thing. So much for securing 5th place this round! We will still be ahead of Ricky Town but only by a point or two, and they have the easier game next week.

OK we lost both the match and the bonus point. I was way wrong with my mid-match estimate of how much more we needed since they more than managed that. We were within 25% based on actual run rates, but less than 25% based on a full 50 over allocation - so I guess the run rate is based on the latter when you don't bat through.

Makes me wonder... the rules are a little ambiguous on this " If the winning team has a run rate more than 25% larger than the opposition, they score the bonus point (total 5 points for the match)". It appears that "run rate" can be calculated in several ways, depending on what happens in the match:

either innings plays to full allocation - actual run rate used (it's the same as effective rate).
first innings ends before over allocation - effective rate based on full over allocation (not sure about this one?)
chasing team wins - actual run rate is used (balls faced)
chasing team loses - effective rate based on full over allocation rather than balls faced

It's doubly confusing as "net run rate" is used to separate a tie on the ladder, and I think this is based on actual overs faced rather than effective no matter when you batted or whether you won.

Anyway I agree that the current approach is probably right, but the rules could probably use some cleaning up to explain exactly what "run rate" means for a team that doesn't bat through its overs.

Yeah, net run rate is always calculated on the full allotment of overs if you get bowled out: that's how it's done in real life. I agree, it needs clarifying in the rules.

Kind of feel we missed out on a big score given where we were at 30 overs.

Well the New Zealand division is going down to the wire and never seen so many teams still in with a shout of winning the title.

Although it will take a lot of results going their way, Black ferns in 5th place could still win the league!

Thanks, and your phrasing is much clearer than mine. Suggest adding that sentence to the rules: Run rate is calculated on the full allotment of overs if you get bowled out.
