Hey everyone. Here's a thread to discuss all things related to BD's International season.
The election just occurred and I ran unopposed and won. OviRajKhan and I had discussed a potential transfer of responsibilities last season, given his increasing RL commitments. As such I am now running the side. If anyone would like to get involved at any capacity, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
Onto the squad announcement. We're playing T20s first up, and I've selected the following 18. I've categorized them by the role they will play, and have ordered them by wage. Ages in brackets:
Batters:
Raun Shkorer (24)
Kadir Azmat (24)
Shan Javed (21)
Balakk Snighda (24)
Taimur Shakoor (24)
Nadeem Musa (26)
Tin Yau (24)
Wicketkeepers/Allrounders:
Jamal Faraz (25) - RF
Sajid Nauman (26) (+)
Hafeez Mahmood (24) - RF
Khawaja Khattak (27) - LM
Hansh Magesh (23) - RMF
Firoz Subbanna (27) (+)
Bowlers:
Uzair Mirza (27) - RWS
Mubashar Obaid (26) - LM (*)
Riaz Khan (21) - LM
Taufeeq Imran (28) - RF (vc)
Tauseef Baloch (20) - RFS
As you can see, it's a well balanced squad in terms of ages. Bowling is a bit thin, with just 5 specialist bowlers picked, but I think our quarter of seam-bowling allrounders will fill in nicely. What we lack is maybe an extra spin bowling option or two. Something to scout for. The batting is loaded with good aggressive batting talent, which is great, and several of them are great fielders too.
First up we play the West Indies on a high moisture low paced pitch. Should be very interesting.

State of Pitch: 79 Moisture, 8 wear, 23 speed
Weather: 5 wind, 69 cloud, 65 heat
Pre-Match Head to Head T20I Record: Played 9, WI won 3, BD won 5, Ties 1
Toss: Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat
Result: West Indies won by 7 wickets.
BD XI: S.Javed, B.Snigdha, R.Shkorer, K.Azmat, H.Magesh, M.Hafeez, K.Khattak, S.Nauman (+), M.Obaid (*), M.Uzair, R.Khan
WI XI: A.Donaldson, P.OFarrell, O.Kenton, S.Hawes, R.Farlow (+), O.Cousins, K.Boardman, D.Griffin, W.Yarnton (*), M.Bathurst, D.Butcher
BD T20I debuts: Shan Javed, Kadir Azmat, Mahmood Hafeez, Sajid Nauman, Riaz Khan
WI T20I debuts: Paul OFarrell, Dave Griffin, Donovan Butcher
And so it begins. The first game of the new season, my first game in charge, and sadly it's a loss. Ah well. Such is the nature of sport. Let us dissect this.
I think the playing XI we picked was good. We had 5 debutants. Shan Javed is a talented defensive batsman, only 21 years old and has a long future for BD ahead of him. Kadir Azmat debuted last season in the ODIs. He's a gun attacking batsman and will have a big role to play this season. Mahmood Hafeez is a seam-bowling allrounder who played 5 ODIs last season. Stats don't look great but he helps balance out the side well. Sajid Nauman has been Firzoz Subanna's understudy as wicketkeeper for a while now, and at 23 years old is now finally now ready to take over the gloves. And lastly Riaz Khan is a 20-year old wonderkid who is making his first international appearance for BD in any format. Exciting.
The West Indian team seems more settled and experienced, though they do have 3 debutants of their own, all of whom were part of their seam attack.
The conditions were good to bat in, but there would be something in it for the new-ball bowlers. I wanted to bat first upon winning the toss. The plan was to get some good runs on the board and and let the seamers work with some scoreboard pressure.
We won the toss, and actually had a really bright start. 48/0 in the powerplay, 58 after 7 overs. But Balak Snigdha was doing all the scoring. He was on 46 off 28 at this point, while Shan Javed was struggling on 8 off 14. Javed ended up facing 10 of the next 14 balls, scoring just 5 runs from them and getting out on the 14th. That little passage of play killed our momentum, and Raun Shkorer walked out with only 66 runs on the board in the first 9.2 overs. Javed finished with 13 off 24.
Not a great start, but it was a platform we could launch off. 40 runs flowed in the next 27 balls, and Shkorer was dismissed last ball of the 14th, the score now 107/2. 160+ was on the cards.
But it wasn't to be. Yarnton (RMF) and Bathurst (RF) are both quality death bowlers, and they bowled really really well. Kadir Azmat (30* off 16) kept finding the fence, but around him the WI death pair squeezed our batters. Snigdha, Magesh, Hafeez and Khattak faced 20 off the final 36 balls and scored just 12 from them. The big finish never came. All told we we failed to score off 15 balls in the final 6 overs - that's over 40%!
149/5 was an under-par score. We would have to bowl well to defend it.
The first 2 overs were good, but debutant Riaz Khan copped some punishment from veteran Adrian Donaldson in the 3rd, getting hit for 6 . 6 4 to start the over. Hafeez pulled it back a bit for us by dismissing him next over (29 off 15 balls), but the damage was done. The asking rate was now under 7 an over, and the most dangerous period to bat had been passed. Ozzie Kenton is a quality player and he played a wonderful innings. That Hansh Magesh 22 run over will hurt our NRR tho. Times like this I wish we had dynamic orders - I envisioned a different scenario when I gave him that over!
Overall I'd have to say our batting unit didn't quite perform up to expectations, but the West Indies did bowl better than us on the day. Butcher and OFarrell put the pressure on Javed with the new ball, while Yarton and Bathurst did that to our lower order. Whether it's a case of poor orders, or players that just aren't right for the roles, I'll need to figure out. Could also just be one of those days where the RNG goes against you, and a couple of guys just don't click.
Another minor point of concern is the same-ishness of our bowling attack - Riaz, Obaid and Khattak are all LM bowlers, bowling around the same pace. Might be worth exploring combinations with more variation.
Positives - Snigdha, Shkorer and Azmat all scoring runs. They're key for us to have a big season. Obaid bowled well, and Hafeez looked good in the powerplay too. Fielding was generally decent - one dropped catch, but it didn't cost us much.
Fitness Updates - Snigdha the most fatigued, naturally, but I expect him to be fit for selection for our next game.

Re: BD International Cricket S29 Discussion
So there has been an update made to the squad. Mumtaz Mansoor replaces Taimur Shakoor. Taimur's a better attacking option, but Mumtaz is a better all-round batter, and I feel we could use a bit more quality in that top order.

Match Report - Bangladesh vs England, T20I, 28th Nov 2021 @ Waltonshire CG
Match ID: 1532764
State of Pitch: 23 Moisture, 53 wear, 49 speed
Weather: 36 wind, 52 cloud, 43 heat
Pre-Match Head to Head T20I Record: Played 8, Eng won 3, BD won 5
Toss: Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl
Result: Bangladesh won by 4 wickets.
BD XI: M.Mansoor, B.Snigdha, R.Shkorer, S.Javed, K.Azmat, S.Nauman (+), K.Khattak, M.Obaid (*), M.Uzair, T.Baloch, T.Imran
Eng XI: L.Clifford, T.Biddle, R.Abbot, T.Bainbridge (+), R.Laurence, B.Alder, Q.Verginix, N.Blackwell, D.Gourley (*), P.Piggot, A.Sicklebough
BD T20I debuts: Mumtaz Mansoor, Tauseef Baloch
Eng T20I debuts: Rylan Laurence, Ben Alder, Nicholas Blackwell
What a win! Toppling one of the strongest nations in the game, and that too in conditions that have traditionally not suited us. Yay!
Talking about the team first - Mumtaz Mansoor was recently drafted into the squad, and was given the chance to open the batting. Shan Javed was retained despite his struggles last game. I slotted him into the middle order - the rationale being that he wasn't right to capitalise in the powerplay, and his skill set might make him better suited to push the ball around in the middle overs in these conditions. There were two changes in the bowling attack too - 20 year old finger-spinner Tauseef Baloch making his debut, and Taufeeq Imran returning in place of Riaz Khan. Allrounder Hansh Magesh and Mahmood Hafeez were the two players from last week's XI who had to sit out. I felt the bowling attack this time had a bit more variety, with 2 genuine spin options (something we've lacked for a couple of seasons) and a bit of extra pace in Imran. Imran's experience also a big plus. The batting lineup still looks strong, tho we were relying a bit on Obaid and Uzair to shore up the lower-middle order.
I felt that the wear in the wicket would make a good 1st innings score hard to judge, and so wanted to bowl first. Thankfully we won the toss again. The numbers suggest we didn't bowl that brilliantly, but we managed to take wickets at the right times. Tauseef Baloch was great on debut, taking 2 wickets in the 14th and then again in the 20th. Those two overs were probably what stopped England from piling on 180+. We also got two wickets in the powerplay, which goes a long way towards restricting a side. Taufeeq Imran built the pressure brilliantly and then Khattak and Obaib nabbed the wickets. Bainbridge batted brilliantly for England, but didn't have much support. Their next highest was 24. We held all the catches that came our way, and in the end, 167/8 was probably just about par.
We got off to the worst possible start, with Mansoor picking up a golden duck on debut! Balakk Snigdha was wonderful again tho, and together with Shkorer took us to 40/1 in the powerplay. Shkorer fell next over, but then Shan Javed played a very impressive innings as well. He kept getting singles while Snigdha kept hitting the fence, and scored 15 at run-a-ball during a 58 run partnership. Snigdha was finally dismissed in the 14th over for 68 in 42 balls. Great knock. We still needed another 64 in the final 39 balls tho. Advantage slightly towards England at this stage. Kadir played a wonderful cameo of 18 off 7 to bring the asking rate down to 8.5 an over, but was runout looking for 2 on the first ball of the 16th over. Sajid Nauman hit his first ball (a no-ball) for 4, but fell in the same over, and England could have had a 3rd if Abbot didn't drop Khattak on the first ball! And the end of that chaotic over, we needed just 34 to win in the final 4 overs.
And that's when Javed stepped up a gear. He had just hit his first boundary on the 18th ball he faced, and hit a six and a four in the next two overs. With 15 needed in 12, he deposited Blackwell for a six, was then dropped at the boundary by Clifford, and then hit another six the next ball! 1 to win and he was on 49 off 31. Alas, there was no 50 for him, as he dragged the next ball onto his stumps. Ah well, brilliant innings nevertheless. He was 16 off 16 at one stage, and then took 33 runs off the next 15 balls faced. Great acceleration. Skipper Obaid hit the final ball of the 19th over for the winning runs, and that was that - our first points for the season!
Positives - A good win all round. The key thing I think is that we took all our catches in the field. England dropped 2 and the first of those drops probably cost them - Khattak scored only 6*, but was able to build a partnership with Javed at a stage where we could have easily collapsed. Nauman was really good behind the stumps as well. Baloch had a great debut, and Imran was excellent with the new ball.
Batting wise Javed bounced back from a poor debut, Snigdha continues to be quality, and Shkorer and Azmat showed glimpses of their genius yet again.
Fitness Updates - Snigdha once again the most tired of the lot, but should be fit by next week. I don't expect anyone to miss out on fitness concerns.

Great update, thanks Zorax. Shame about Mansoor's debut! If it's any consolation he has only had 5 '0's in 122 innings and that was his first golden egg...hopefully his last!

Haha I think the pressure of the big stage got to him a bit. Hopefully the nerves settle by next game

Ind XI: A.Venkatesan, H.Solkar (*), A.Haroon, I.Thuraisingham (+), J.Nagin, J.Mahale, H.Sarwar, N.Tickoo, D.Pratima, D.Diwan, B.Koppolu
BD T20I debuts: None
Ind T20I debuts: None
We're into Week 3 of the season and both sides seemed settle with their combinations. No debuts on either team - we went in unchanged from our win over England - and the pitch seem solid for batting. We won the toss, and we batted first. All smooth so far.
Mumtaz Mansoor negotiated the first couple of balls before scoring his first international run on the 3rd. Then then hit his first 3 boundaries in the space of 4 balls in the 3rd over. 20/0, bright start. Snigdha got a peach from Tickoo, who then also picked up Shkorer off a loose shot right after the powerplay. 49/2 in 7. Going ok. Mansoor picks up a boundary next over, but gets tied up in knots by Koppolu and his dismissed after 3 dot balls. 59/3 after 9. Now we're on the back foot. Azmat plays all over a 90 mph toe crushed next ball, and we're 64/4 at the halfway stage in deep trouble.
We rallied well, mainly thanks to Sajid Nauman's maiden T20I fifty! He scored exactly 50 off 33 balls, 47 of them with Shan Javed at the other end. Shan made just 8 off 11 in a 57 run partnership, ticking the strike over as Nauman played a dazzling array of strokes. We were 111/4 in 16 overs and Nauman thumped two boundaries to start the 17th. Momentum was building. But then Javed swung and missed at a straight one, bowled for 16 off 18. A shame as this is the stage in his innings where he steps on the gas. Nauman brought up his fifty first ball of the 18th, but then played a poor shot the ball after. 124/6. Obaid hit his first 4 balls for 14 runs, but Tickoo and Koppolu bowled two very strong final overs - too good for our lower order. We ended on 142/7. Below par but runs on the board.
The Indian openers came out strong, and even though Taufeeq Imran broke through in the 3rd over, they had already put 30 on the board. Skipper Solkar was brutal tho, and finished the powerplay on 44 off 21. India 60/1, the asking rate below 6, and the result now a formality. Solkar would end on 72* off 43, and keeper Thuraisingham on 46* off 22 coming in at 4. They just tore us apart, we lost with more than 5 overs to spare.
Disappointing loss, but don't think there was much else we could have done. They're the stronger side and we couldn't pull off the upset. We were around 40 runs short of a competitive target - what we needed was someone in the top order to click and bat through the innings. Raun hasn't fired yet, and I'm wondering if we should bat Kadir higher up the order.
Positives - A fine 50 from Sajid Nauman, first international runs for Mumtaz Mansoor, and good spells again from Imran and Obaid. We didn't miss any chances in the field (not that they gave us many), and atleast some of our bats got starts. Just need them to have a big innings soon.
Fitness Updates - No major concerns, every should be fit for our next game. We play Australia - what a brutal 3 weeks!

Cheers Hector. Game against Aus didn't go our way - will have a report up in the coming days.
We've made one more change to the squad - destructive, hyper talented Sajid Shami has been drafted in, replacing Nadeem Musa.
