SOD Div 1 S27

So as its the first time I've been up here for a while I thought I'd do a quick pre-season summary of the league, which should be its most competitive running ever!

Firstly, there are three new promoted teams in the division this season, namely: Perry Pirates CC, Chester Ducks and West Row Wyverns.

Perry Pirates CC, won their league fairly comfortably in the end. They have a well balanced team but don't really have any stars. They will cause some trouble for the teams in the league but you feel they may want to invest to compete in a very difficult division.

Chester Ducks ruthlessly destroyed their league and are a huge contender for the title this season. The side is star studded and dangerous. You would expect them to be right up there for the title.

West Row Wyverns just about got their foot in the door but realistically they probably won't stay there for too long. The side is relatively young and although it boasts a couple of stars they may be off the pace of other top sides this season. Still, the side is full of specialists and on the day they could beat anyone.

Now to round up the summaries, we head to the top 5 from last season:

Pest CCC, the winners of the title last season have sold off some of their older players and have seen some strong players coming through. Whether the lack of experience will cause issues is yet to be seen but with some extremely strong batsman and a well balanced bowling attack they should be challenging once again.

Pro Crastinators have also sold off a couple of players this season but seem to be active on the market looking to strengthen their starting 11. They hold an exceptionally strong batting line up however as it stands will be blooding some youth in the first 11.

KryptoKnights, the best South African team kept their place in the division last season. An experienced manager with a balanced squad, Krypto will definitely be competitive this season and are likely to give most teams a real challenge. They are unlikely to be challenging for the title but should finish mid table and retain their div 1 spot.

Waldron Wanderers, a stalwart of the English leagues who has rarely dipped into div 2. The current team is ageing and it may be the end of a dominant era for the team. Given the strength of the league you feel they will be in the mid table fight to avoid the drop.

And finally, Setemares. Somehow (I'm still not entirely sure how) they avoided being relegated last season. The side is in a rebuilding phase and although they may cause the odd side trouble on their day you would imagine they are almost certain to drop this time around.

The watchlist XI

1. Wijeratne (Pest CCC)
2. Connick (Perry Pirates CC)
3. Truelove (Pro Crastinators)
4. Biddle (Waldron Wanderers)
5. Majozi (Chester Ducks)
6. Subbhana (Pest CCC)
7. Botha (KryptoKnights)
8. Pompolnius (West Row Wyverns)
9. Brown (Setemares)
10. McKinnon (Chester Ducks)
11. BernStein (Pro Crastinators)
Manager of West Row Wyverns and affiliate East Row Eagles
Winner of the grand slam in season 13 (Dev, T20, SOD, Cup, International)

Nice intro, looking forward to the first round tomorrow! I feel you're strategically underselling youself though ;)

My season depends a lot on what market opportunities come up to rebalance my side. And whether Mncwabe can step up a level and start matching Truelove.

I won't be staying up this season. It was a long shot last season, but possible, so I went for it, but there's simply no path to success here that won't ruin the rebuild. My apologies to all for the boring matches this season, but hopefully I'll be back to give you a good game before too long.

Main focus this season is dev survival. T20 I'm not sure about yet.

Only read this now .

First off , thank you for the kind words however from my prospective i am in a fight to survive . I am bleeding some youngsters to become the core of my team .

Rudi is definitely one of my best players and always seem to have decent seasons . A very valuable wicket for me this season is Uys Fouche who if nationals were underway would've had his cap . Last season he under performed due to a mixture of low exp and a miserable form roll .Mark Rumble is another future national and is devastating when he gets going .

Last but not least , you are heavily under valuing yourself and i am sure we all aware if you can get things going we are all in trouble . As for the competitive nature of this league , its nuts ..... . Every win is going to be hard fuaght with every team having at least one player that can turn everything on its head .

Well that was an epic start to round one, with 3 fairly closeish matches (and one not so close match) this league promises to be extremely competitive!

West Row Wyverns had a nice easy start first up against a weakened Setemares. It was paramount for us to not only get a bonus point win, but also to smash that NRR as it may become important down the line. Batting first, West Row scored 362/7 with a fine PB of 114 from new signing Donaldson. Nemulis helped propel the score up over 350 with a quick fire 52*. Despite some slight fight from Setemares more experienced middle order, they never looked in with a chance and finished on 149. Blackadder the pick of the bowlers with 6/43!

Perry Pirates faced an infinitely harder challenge on entry into div 1, facing holders Pest CCC. Batting first Perry Pirates looked like they would get over 300, but a strong fightback, particular from Chopra, limited Perry Pirates to 270, the lowest batting first score of the round. Pest CCC once again got off to a flyer as Wijeratne and Tampoe combined for a mammoth opening stand. Wijeratne finished on 149* and kicked off from his stupidly impressive performances last season. Despite missing the BP, Pest CC got home comfortably with 8 and a bit overs to spare.

KryptoKnights hosted Waldron in what will be very important early points on the board as both teams will need to secure wins to avoid a relegation fight. Waldron batted first and despite some wobbles ended on a respectable 287/7 courtesy of a quickfire 80 from Biddle. However, KryptoKnights chased down the total with a good 4 overs to spare. How vital will those points be come the end of the season?

And finally, in what was a huge crunch match for the title, Chester Ducks hosted Pro Crastinators. Choosing to bat, Chester Ducks faltered early and required some strong middle over boshing from Aston and Majozi to get Chester up to 279. However, criminally Chester Ducks were bowled out in the 49th over and definitely felt a few runs short on a good batting wicket. Pro Crastinators showed the value of an exceptionally strong batting line up as fans watched in awe as Truelove and Mncwabe made a mockery of Chester's pace attack and got them home with overs to spare.

So early signs indicate that Pest CCC and Pro Crastinators are just as dangerous as they were last season and look like the teams to watch! Next week Pro Castinators host newly promoted West Row, Pest CCC travel to Krypto, Chester Ducks entertain the whipping boys Setemares and Waldron Wanderers face a tasty proposition again Perry Pirates.

Team of the week

1. Wijeratne (Pest CCC) - 149* (139)
2. Martinus (KryptoKnights) - 80 (82)
3. Truelove (Pro Crastinators) - 88 (95)
4. Donaldson (West Row Wyverns) - 114 (83)
5. Mncwabe (Pro Crastinators) - 113* (93)
6. Nemulis (West Row Wyverns) - 52*(31), 2 wk catches
7. Plant (Waldron Wanderers) - 33*(42)* and 1/39
8. Bezuidenhout (KryptoKnights) - 3/67
9. Blackadder (West Row Wyverns) - 6/43
10. Chopra (Pest CCC) - 4/54
11. Liebenberg (Pro Crastinators) - 1/34

Good stuff rtj

Congrats to Pro-C, we may have left a few runs in the pavilion but would still back our bowlers to defend that normally but couldn't crack that partnership. Instead of partnership breaking, Shariff got a bit of a tonking.
